Rising Sun is a board game designed by Eric Lang that has raised over $3 million through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.  Based on the Japanese feudal system, the ancient Kami spirits have returned because they are displeased by human endeavors and wish to restore virtue on earth.   The game is for 3 to 5 players who guide their clans to remake Japan in the image of the great Kami.  Players take on the role of Shogun, or military commander, and accumulate victory points in order to become the next emperor.

Rising Sun Japanese Board Game

Rising sun is played over the course of a year. During the individual seasons of the year game players set political mandates, form alliances, seek favor from the Gods, and wage war to win Japan.  Each clan has its own unique abilities but benefits by forming alliances with other clans.  Based on their political mandate, players can recruit additional units, marshal their armies geographically, upgrade their clan through training, harvest the spoils of the lands they control, or betray their alliance to enlist opposing forces.

There are 5 clans to choose from in the RisingSun game, including Koi, Dragonfly, Bonsai, Lotus and Turtle.

  • Koi are flexible and unpredictable
  • Dragonfly can move around freely with their wings
  • Bonsai do not require coins when buying resources
  • Lotus can transform political mandates into their own desires
  • Turtle shells serve as fortresses that cannot be destroyed

The Rising Sun game box comes with 50 detailed warriors (10 for each different clan) for their Daimyo, Shinto and Bushi units, 8 monsters, 40 counters, 137 tokens, 5 clan screens, 5 political sheets, 53 cards, a game board and a book of rules.  Additionally there are Kickstarter exclusives like Ronin tokens, war markers, strongholds, fox clan Daimyo, fire dragon and DaiKaiJu monsters.

To date, the Rising Sun board game has raised $3,445,833 with 26,122 backers through a Kickstarter fundraising campaign.  The RisingSun business initiated crowd funding in March 7, 2017 and reached its funding goal of $300,000 on the same day. CoolMini established stretch goals that include an extra sculpt for Koi Bushi figures in all core game boxes for reaching $330K in funding; Bonsai Bushi extra sculpture for reaching $360K;  and engraved Ronin tokens for $1,020K, Raijin Kami figure for reaching $3,470K.
